An Introvert's Guide to Networking at Tech Events
Tech Events Don't Have to Be Scary: This Guide is Your Survival Kit (For Introverts Only)
Happy New Month, guys! Tech Event Season has begun, and this year's lineup looks pretty exciting. From the long-awaited "Co-Create West Africa Tech Expo" by NITDA x Gage to Tech Unite Africa 3.0, there will be no shortage of opportunities for tech enthusiasts to network and learn from industry experts. However, for introverts, networking at these events can be a daunting task. In this article, we'll share some tips and strategies to help introverts make the most of their time at tech events.
Why do I need to network anyway?
As someone who used to be terrified of walking up to strangers at tech events and saying hello, I understand how nerve-wracking networking can be. However, I've found that with the right mindset and a few simple strategies, networking can actually be a fun and productive experience. In fact, I've made some of my closest friends and professional connections by taking the plunge and putting myself out there.
That aside, connecting with others in your field can lead to new opportunities, whether it's job offers, mentorship, or simply learning from others' experiences and knowledge. So even if it's not your favorite activity, networking is a skill worth developing for your professional success.
How do I choose who to network with?
At a tech event, everyone shares a love for technology, but it's impossible to connect with every attendee. You need to narrow down your options.
Firstly, it's important to focus on the type of people who share similar interests or work in related fields with you. This could be determined by their engagement in specific sessions or group discussions. Secondly, pay attention to those who display an approachable demeanor, such as smiling, maintaining open body language, or actively participating in conversations. Finally, take the leap of faith and say hi! Yes, it may feel uncomfortable or uncertain, but it's essential to take the risk. Remember, you cannot anticipate what the other person might think unless you make an effort to initiate a conversation.
How do I network?
A nice way to get started with networking at an event is to participate in an ongoing discussion. This way, you can ease into the conversation without feeling the pressure of having to start it. You can listen to what others are saying, and when you feel comfortable, add your own thoughts and ideas. It's also a great way to meet new people with similar interests and to learn from experts in your field. Don't be afraid to approach groups and introduce yourself - everyone is there to network and connect with others. Just be yourself, and enjoy the opportunity to make new connections.
For 1:1 networking, once you’ve identified the person you’d like to establish a connection with, it’s time to shoot your shot. Start with a simple greeting, introduce yourself and state what you do, then ask them a question about their interests or work. This will help break the ice and start a conversation. Remember, networking is not just about talking about yourself, but also listening to others and learning from their experiences. Avoid dominating the conversation and make sure to ask follow-up questions to show your interest. If the discussion goes smoothly, be sure to exchange contact information with those you connect with to continue the conversation and build a professional relationship.

Tips for networking at tech events
Come prepared: Do your research on various topics oriented around the central theme of the event. You don’t want to get involved in a conversation, only to sound like a dunce. Additionally, it's always a good idea to have some questions prepared in advance to ask other attendees. This can show that you're interested in the event and can help to break the ice with new people.
Dress appropriately for the occasion: Casual attire for casual events and business attire for conferences. Choosing the right outfit can boost your confidence, making it easier to approach others. It also leaves a good impression on listeners. For most tech events in Nigeria, a casual but neat look is the way to go. You don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard or being too serious, and at the same time, you don’t want to look like you left home in your PJs.
If possible, come with an extroverted friend: someone who can help break the ice and introduce you to new people. It can be quite intimidating to attend social events alone; it’s even more so when you’re introverted. But with a friendly and outgoing companion by your side, you'll feel more at ease and be more likely to connect with others. Plus, your extroverted friend may even introduce you to someone who becomes a close friend or valuable professional contact.
Avoid unnecessary comparisons: Comparing yourself to others is a surefire way to zap your confidence. The truth is, most people at tech events, even the seemingly self-assured ones, are likely battling nerves just like you. We're all there to learn, grow, and connect, regardless of our current skill level. So, instead of feeling discouraged by someone with more experience, view it as an opportunity to learn from them! Ask questions, soak up their insights, and remember, their journey started somewhere too.
Don’t be so quick to leave: When attending tech events, it's important to remember that networking is a key aspect of the experience. To make the most of your time, try not to be too quick to leave once the event has ended. Instead, take the opportunity to strike up conversations with other attendees and exchange contact information. Remember, networking is all about building relationships, so take the time to get to know people and follow up with them after the event.
Take breaks: Navigating through bustling crowds and trying to establish friendships with strangers will surely drain your social battery. To avoid a meltdown before the event is finished, it’s important to take a break every now and then to recharge. Find a quiet corner or step outside for some fresh air. You could even take a quick nap if you’re feeling particularly exhausted. Remember, it’s better to take a few minutes to recharge than to push yourself too hard and have to leave early.
